Common Good
Nevadans for the Common Good (NCG) is dedicated to educating and training citizens to participate in public life. Diverse institutions work together to build relationships, find common ground on issues, and act in nonpartisan ways to improve life for all Nevadans.
Our goal is to work in solidarity across lines of race, class, and religion to build relational power for collective action in the pursuit of justice and the common good. Recent work has included areas such as education, elder care, and immigration.
NCG & UMSM
Nevadans for the Common Good and United Methodist Social Ministries make an excellent partnership.
NCG works to build relationships across the community based on trust and a willingness to listen to each other in order to achieve change on concrete issues, as part of our common call to justice.
UMSM is a network connecting and engaging the hopes and passions of United Methodists as we create social care and change through partnerships and advocacy.
Who is NCG?
Nevadans for the Common Good is a broad-based coalition of institutions in the Las Vegas area with three basic goals:
- to build relationships across the community based on trust and a willingness to listen to each other;
- to equip NCG members and leadership with skills and practices to get results;
- to achieve change on concrete issues, as part of our common call to justice.
Current NCG Issues
Leadership Development:
to help member institutions strengthen and grow in order to act on the issues that are important to them.
Payday Lending Reform:
NCG leaders helped pass SB201, to protect consumers from the payday lending debt cycle before the damage to families has been done.
Affordable Housing:
In 2019, NCG worked with housing advocates to pass SB448 to create about 600 new affordable housing units per year through a $10 million per year tax credit program.
Meals on Wheels:
After learning the State of Nevada contributed on average only $0.22 per meal to this program (the lowest rate in the country), NCG successfully lobbied the State Legislature to increase funding for the Meals on Wheels program by $3.4 million.
Education:
NCG is committed to working with partner schools through our Alliance Schools Strategy to devise and implement effective steps for improving public education — successfully advocate for $500 million in new funding for targeted programs to improve our public education system.
